The Friendship Ladder
Understand the natural progression from stranger to close friend.
Relationships Have Levels
Friendships don't happen instantly — they develop through predictable stages. Understanding these stages helps you know what's appropriate at each level:
Level 1 — Stranger: No interaction yet. You might see them regularly but haven't spoken.
Level 2 — Acquaintance: You've exchanged names and basic pleasantries. You chat when you happen to meet.
Level 3 — Casual Friend: You make plans to see each other. You know about each other's lives and interests.
Level 4 — Close Friend: You share personal thoughts and feelings. You support each other through difficulties.
Level 5 — Best Friend/Intimate: Deep trust, vulnerability, and mutual support. These relationships take years to build.
